The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date 1500 is a 34 mm steel Oyster produced from the early 1960s into the late 1970s as the chronometer-rated, smooth-bezel sibling of the fluted-bezel Datejust 1600, distinguished by its polished bezel and drilled lugs. Early examples ran the caliber 1565; production shifted partway through the run to the 26-jewel caliber 1570, which gained a hacking seconds function in late-production pieces but never a quickset date, so the calendar advances only by cycling the hands through midnight. Rolex certified the movement as a "Superlative Chronometer, Officially Certified," the designation printed on the dial beneath the Cyclops-magnified date window. (Bob's Watches)
