The Hamilton Ventura is the electric wristwatch Hamilton launched in 1957, the first to drive its balance from a battery instead of a mainspring: the calibre 500 kept the balance swinging through electrical contacts, leaving a watch that was mechanical in everything but its power source and a step short of the quartz movements that followed a decade later. Richard Arbib drew the asymmetric shield case, a wedge of gold that carries 1950s American futurism more plainly than any dial could. The shape outlasted the movement, and Hamilton builds the Ventura today on conventional calibres. (Hamilton)
