Created by Dick Wolf as the first spinoff of Law & Order, this NBC police procedural follows the detectives of the New York Police Department's Special Victims Unit as they investigate sex crimes. Mariska Hargitay has played Detective, later Lieutenant, Olivia Benson since the series premiered on September 20, 1999, making the character the longest-running lead in American primetime drama history; original co-star Christopher Meloni played her partner Elliot Stabler for the show's first twelve seasons.
