The Breitling Chronomat is the automatic chronograph line Breitling launched in 1984, its centenary year, developed from a chronograph built the previous year for the Frecce Tricolori aerobatic team. Its signature is the rotating bezel's four raised rider tabs, which shield the crystal from knocks and mark the quarter hours, unscrewing at 15 and 45 to invert the bezel's count. Ernest Schneider staked Breitling's recovery on the mechanical relaunch while slim quartz dominated the market. The original reference 81950 ran 39 mm; the mid-2000s Evolution and later generations are materially larger. (Breitling, Swisswatches)
