The Breitling Chronomat reference 81950 is the automatic chronograph launched in 1984, Breitling's centenary year, developed out of a chronograph the brand had built the previous year for the Frecce Tricolori, the Italian Air Force aerobatic team. Its signature is the rotating bezel's four raised rider tabs, which shield the crystal against knocks such as a closing canopy and mark the quarter hours; the tabs at 15 and 45 unscrew and invert so the bezel counts either up or down. The 39 mm case keeps the rest restrained. Ernest Schneider, who had taken over Breitling in 1979, staked the relaunch on a mechanical chronograph while slim quartz dominated, and the bet carried the brand's recovery.
