Rolex Sea-Dweller
More actions
The Rolex Sea-Dweller reference 1665 arrived in 1967 as the first Rolex built for saturation diving, where divers breathe helium mixtures and live for days in pressurised chambers. Helium atoms small enough to work their way into a sealed case expand during decompression and can force the crystal clean off; Rolex answered with a one-way gas escape valve at nine o'clock, developed around work with the US Navy and the French diving contractor COMEX, and every Sea-Dweller since has carried one. The 40 mm Oyster case was rated to 610 metres and its earliest dials read "SUBMARINER 2000" in red, hence the "Double Red" nickname. The rating doubled to 1,220 metres with the sapphire-crystal reference 16660 in 1978. (Monochrome, Oracle of Time)
