An Elgin watch is a pocket or wristwatch made by the Elgin National Watch Company, one of the major American watch manufacturers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The company completed its first watch, the B. W. Raymond pocket watch, on April 1, 1867. (Elgin.Watch) Not every Elgin on screen left the Elgin factory: the pocket watch Tom Hanks carries in Cast Away is a production-made prop with a dial labeled Elgin, built to resemble a vintage Elgin pocket watch, and appears here as a look-alike rather than a placement.
