The IWC Big Pilot's Watch descends from the B-Uhr observation watches IWC supplied to navigators from 1940: a 55 mm instrument with an oversized conical crown that could be worked while wearing flight gloves, a soft-iron inner cage shielding the movement from magnetic fields up to 32,000 A/m, and a black dial carrying luminous Arabic numerals. IWC revived the format in 2002 with reference IW5002, bringing the case down to 46 mm and 15.8 mm thick while keeping the outsized crown, the antimagnetic cage and the matte black Super-LumiNova dial, now with a date at 6 o'clock. Its automatic calibre 5011 uses the house Pellaton winding system and an aluminium barrel good for well over a week of running. (Monochrome)
