The Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox is the alarm wristwatch Jaeger-LeCoultre showed at Basel in 1950, its name built from the Latin for a voice that remembers, and its answer to the Vulcain Cricket of the year before. The manual calibre 489 was the first alarm movement to drive the alarm from a mainspring of its own rather than borrowing the going train's, which is what the upper crown is for: it winds that second barrel and turns the inner disc to the hour the watch should sound, while the lower crown keeps the time. In 1956 the calibre 815 made the same complication self-winding, the first automatic movement to carry an alarm. (Watchonista)
