From CK 2915 to the Professional case
Omega introduced the CK 2915 Speedmaster in 1957 as a racing chronograph with the tachymeter scale moved from the dial to the bezel. Wally Schirra wore his personal straight-lug CK 2998 during Mercury-Atlas 8 in 1962. NASA qualified the Speedmaster for crewed missions on 1 March 1965; the asymmetrical case and lyre lugs associated with the Professional followed within the same decade. Fratello's reference-by-reference overview is useful here: “Speedmaster” spans the Broad Arrow, straight-lug CK 2998, Professional case, Mark series, and several branches that share little beyond the name and chronograph layout.
Reconstructing the space program
First Man uses a prop recreation of the 105.012 associated with Neil Armstrong's Apollo 11 era. The watch is production chronology made visible: twisted lugs, stepped dial, and external tachymeter supply period specificity without dialogue.
For a collector, “Moonwatch” is only the start of the identification. Straight versus twisted lugs, stepped versus flat dials, bezel typography, and pusher shape separate watches that collapse into the same black tri-compax silhouette on screen.
Apollo 13 gives the chronograph dramatic work. NASA's mission history records a manually controlled 14.8-second lunar-module engine burn used to refine the re-entry path. The film reduces the sequence to the black dial and central chronograph seconds hand; elapsed time, not brand recognition, carries the scene.
The same historical shorthand appears in Gravity, where the watch head is mounted to Matt Kowalski's suit without its normal bezel, and in First Man. These are distinct prop configurations inside the broader Moonwatch vocabulary.
The Professional outside spaceflight
The Professional's high-contrast tri-compax layout reads as an instrument even when the plot has no connection to NASA. Russell Crowe wears a limited edition as Cal McAffrey in State of Play and a Professional on a Fix-o-Flex-style bracelet as Jackson Healy in The Nice Guys. George Clooney's assassin wears one on leather in The American; his television host in Money Monster instead wears a discontinued solid-gold variant.
Those configurations change the watch's register without changing its basic geometry. Bracelet, strap, case metal, and dial execution are material to the identification; “black Speedmaster” is not enough to separate a Professional from the Reduced, Broad Arrow, Chronoscope, or later co-axial branches.
A mechanical object in fictional futures
Event Horizon opens with a floating Professional, carrying a recognizably mechanical chronograph into 2047. Space Force, Moonfall, and The Adam Project use the same continuity between present hardware and speculative settings.
Stowaway is reference-specific: Daniel Dae Kim wears the orange-accented #SpeedyTuesday II “Ultraman” on an extended strap over the EVA suit. Fratello reports that Omega supplied both watch and extended strap. The choice joins the Professional's NASA-derived wearing position to the separate Ultraman screen lineage.
