Porsche Design Chronograph One

The Porsche Design Chronograph One was Ferdinand Alexander "Butzi" Porsche's first product for his new Porsche Design studio: a day-date chronograph manufactured by Orfina in Grenchen and released in 1972 as the first commercially available all-black wristwatch, its PVD coating chosen for legibility, the same reasoning behind his own 911's black dashboard. (Wikipedia) The launch reference 7750 ran the Valjoux 7750 caliber; once the quartz crisis curtailed Valjoux production around 1974, Orfina moved the line to the Lemania 5100, whose central seconds hand and 24-hour subdial mark the later civilian ref. 7176 and military ref. 7177 apart from the three-register original. Dials and casebacks carried both the "Orfina" and "Porsche Design" names until the "pd" logo alone took over around 1977, one continuous production run rather than two distinct products. (Monochrome Watches) The Porsche Design Chronograph 1 All Black Numbered Edition is the maker's modern numbered reissue.
