Production history

What do you make a watch for when the movie can't have one? Hamilton's answer, after three straight Nolan collaborations building watches you could actually see on screen, is a 2,112-piece bronze reference for a film set in the Bronze Age.

Hamilton's screen résumé is long, but its work with Christopher Nolan is a different kind of engagement. Across Interstellar, Tenet, Oppenheimer, and The Odyssey, the brand has been prop shop, product licensee, museum lender, and finally something close to a co-author of merchandise for a story set three thousand years before the wristwatch. Each film used the brand differently, and the catalog objects left behind record the drift.

Interstellar: the prop came first, the reference came later

The watch that carries the climactic message in Interstellar was not a catalog piece. Hamilton built the props for the production: Jessica Chastain's Murph wears the field watch that receives "STAY" and the quantum data through its seconds hand, and Matthew McConaughey's Cooper wears a pilot's piece Hamilton also made for the film. Neither could be bought in 2014.

Both eventually could, in inverted order of prominence. The Khaki Pilot Day Date reached the catalog as reference H64615135, a 42 mm steel Type B flieger with Hamilton's H-40 automatic (Beans & Bezels). Murph's watch took five years: the 2019 Khaki Field Murph, reference H70605731, reproduces the prop at 42 mm and spells "EUREKA" in Morse code on its seconds hand (Hamilton). A 38 mm version, reference H70405730, followed in 2022 with the same jet-black dial and cathedral hands; the Morse-code spine did not survive the shrink (Monochrome).

The partnership's first retail object, though, predates the Murph and never appears in any film. The 2016 ODC X-03, 999 pieces, was drawn by Interstellar production designer Nathan Crowley as a tribute to Hamilton's prop work on that film and on 2001: A Space Odyssey: three stacked dials labelled LOCAL, UTC, and HOME over a ground printed with Jupiter's cloud bands (aBlogtoWatch). From the start, the collaboration was already producing objects whose only screen presence is allusion.

Tenet: modified stock one way, boxed editions the other

Tenet put the machinery on screen. The production took Hamilton's Khaki BeLOWZERO, the all-black 46 mm titanium diver in the catalog since 2008, and fitted examples with digital displays that glow red or blue: the color tells the audience which direction through time the wearer is moving. It is the rare case of a watch carrying a film's exposition on its dial.

Hamilton's retail answer translated the cue into analog form and split it into two boxes. The H78505331 carries a blue-tipped seconds hand and the H78505332 a red one, 888 pieces each, in packaging designed by Crowley (Professional Watches). The editions themselves never appear in the film; the screen watches were modified stock, and no production edition carries the props' display. Prop and product no longer matched.

The film's second Hamilton is easy to miss because it is meant to be. When the Protagonist needs to read as rich enough to merit a meeting with Andrei Sator, he swaps the tool watch for a Jazzmaster Seaview Chrono Quartz, reference H37512131, a 44 mm steel quartz chronograph straight from the catalog (InsideHook). The costume joke lands because other characters read straight through the borrowed styling. One film, three roles for the same brand: modified prop, catalog costume, boxed collectible.

Oppenheimer: the archive instead of the catalog

For Oppenheimer there was no product at all. Hamilton went the other way and lent history: six vintage pieces from its archive and collector network, spanning the 1920s to the late 1940s, dressed the principals of a story that runs from Göttingen to the security hearing (Forbes).

The casting inside the case list is precise, even where the frames are not. Oppenheimer's three watches are dress pieces that age with him, and they rotate on the same wrist: Hamilton's production account establishes all three, while no available frame resolves which model appears in which scene. Groves gets the 1928 Piping Rock, a tonneau dress watch the general would plausibly have owned for nearly two decades by Los Alamos, and a wartime Military Ordnance in steel, the one genuinely military piece in the set, on the man running the Army's largest project (FHS; ATimelyPerspective). Emily Blunt's Kitty wears the set's single woman's watch, a 1947 Lady Hamilton A-2 in 14-karat gold on her right wrist; press accounts agree on the karat and disagree on the gold's color, with Time+Tide specifying white gold (Time+Tide).

The set has edges, and they are worth keeping visible. In at least one Trinity scene Groves wears a third watch, a small white-dial field piece on dark leather that matches neither confirmed Hamilton and remains unidentified (WatchReel). Robert Downey Jr.'s Lewis Strauss wears a two-register chronograph on an expansion bracelet in the black-and-white timeline; the silvered dial reads as a probable late-1940s Breitling Premier, though no branding is legible and Watch Clicker reads the same frame as possibly an Endicott variant (Watch Clicker). The Hamilton program was real and documented; it was never the whole wardrobe.

The Odyssey: a watch for a film that cannot show one

The Odyssey closes the loop. A Bronze Age setting allows no wristwatch, so for the first time the collaboration produced only the object with no screen counterpart: the Khaki Field Auto The Odyssey, reference H70675530, released 17 July 2026 alongside the film (Hamilton).

The design translates the poem instead of a prop brief. The 42 mm bronze case is meant to patina like an object of Odysseus' era; the black dial is textured after his helmet; the hands take sword and spear forms; and the 2,112-piece run plays on the recurrence of twelve in Homer (Monochrome). Hamilton calls it the fourth Nolan project and the first conceived as a collectible inspired by the story rather than a watch worn on screen.

Set beside the 2016 ODC X-03, the Odyssey edition looks less like a departure and more like a strand finally coming into its own. The collaboration has always run in two directions: props that later became references, and references that never needed a frame of film. Interstellar produced both kinds. Oppenheimer produced neither and lent museum pieces instead. The Odyssey produces only the second kind, which makes it the purest expression of what this partnership now is: Hamilton no longer dresses Nolan's characters so much as it publishes editions of his stories.

The Nolan films Hamilton never touched

The partnership starts abruptly in 2014, and nothing before it hints at a house brand. Bruce Wayne wears a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Grande Taille through Batman Begins and The Dark Knight; the Joker answers with a Casio calculator watch. Inception spreads five makers across its ensemble, one per dreamer, from Leonardo DiCaprio's TAG Heuer Carrera to Elliot Page's Cartier Tank.

The sharper boundary sits inside the partnership itself. Dunkirk, released between Interstellar and Tenet, puts Tom Hardy's Farrier in an Omega CK2129, the RAF-issue reference that fits May 1940. Hamilton could supply the 1940s, as Oppenheimer later proved, but its wartime output went to the American armed forces, and Farrier flies a Spitfire. Period logic beat partnership logic, which tells you what the partnership is: an arrangement Nolan's productions use when the story allows it, never a rule the wardrobe has to obey.
