The Casio G-Shock is Casio's family of shock-resistant watches, which grew from a one-line proposal by designer Kikuo Ibe in 1981: a watch that would not break even if dropped. Roughly 200 prototypes failed before Ibe, watching children bounce a rubber ball, arrived at the answer: suspend the module inside a hollow case so it floats, behind several layers of shock absorption. The team worked to a "Triple 10" target of surviving a 10-metre drop, 10-bar water resistance and a 10-year battery, and the first G-Shock, the DW-5000C, reached the market in 1983. That floating-module principle still underpins a range spanning digital, analogue-digital and full-metal models, from Baby-G to the Master of G and MR-G lines, with over 100 million sold.
