The TAG Heuer Monaco launched in 1969 as a Heuer — the firm did not become TAG Heuer until 1985 — and broke with everything around it: a square, water-resistant case at a time when a chronograph meant a round one, holding the Calibre 11, one of the first automatic chronograph movements. Its winding crown sits on the left, an open statement that an automatic no longer needs hand-winding, while the chronograph pushers stay in their usual place on the right. Steve McQueen chose the blue-dial reference 1133B for Le Mans in 1971, and the watch has been inseparable from him since. The TAG Heuer Monaco CBL2111.BA0644 is the modern production Monaco closest to that screen-worn 1133B. (Monochrome)
