The Cartier Santos, made for aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont in 1904, is often called the first purpose-built pilot's wristwatch: its square bezel and visible screws, said to echo the newly built Eiffel Tower, became the line's signature. Cartier relaunched it in 1978 as the steel-bracketed Santos de Cartier, adding an integrated bracelet with exposed screws in the same era as Gerald Genta's Royal Oak and Nautilus, turning a dress accessory into a luxury sports watch that remains in production today.
